Academic Fund The Academic All-American Scholarship Fund is designed to raise money for our student-athletes who have been selected by Pop Warner as Academic All-American Scholars. These scholars, through their hard work and dedication to scholastic excellence have been selected by Pop Warner to attend DisneyWorld in Orlando, Florida for a banquet held in their honor. However, attending the banquet is not free, nor is it inexpensive. In addition to the cost of transportation to Orlando and back, Academic All-Americans and their families have to pay for accommodations, attending the Tribute to Scholars, the dinner banquet, as well as tickets for attending any of the DisneyWorld theme parks. (It costs $2 each, if you are also attending the banquet dinner.) The dinner costs $65 for each parent, guest or additional family member. It costs the player $35 if he is a "Second Team" or "Honorable Mention" Scholar. (Only a "First Team" Scholar can eat for free.) The room rate for staying at Disney is $139 per night. Attending a Disney Theme Park costs either $50 per person (if you attend a Theme Park after 2pm) or $39 per person (if you attend a Theme Park after 4pm). The difficulty in attending a Theme Park on the day of the Scholars Banquet is that the Scholars Banquet begins that evening at 6:30pm. The $39 ticket at Disney is not practical, as you would have only 2.5 hours to use it. Your only other option is the $50 ticket, and you have only between 2:30pm and 6:30pm to use it. A Scholar and his family would have less than 4 hours to visit a Theme Park (including travel to and from the Theme Park and arriving back in time to prepare for the Scholars Banquet). If you stay an extra day in order to attend a full day at a Disney Theme Park, the hotel charge is an additional $139. Breaking Down the Costs (based on 1 Scholar and 2 adults): Travel to Orlando, Florida (cost depends on whether you are driving or flying.) Hotel (costs $139 per night; 2 nights = $278) Tribute to Scholars ($2 for anyone other than the Scholar, if they are also attending the Dinner Banquet; 2 adults = $4) Dinner Banquet ($35 for the Scholar, if he is "Second Team" or "Honorable Mention." $65 for each family member; 1 Scholar + 2 adults = $165) Attending a Disney Theme Park ($50 per person; 3 people = $150) Total = $597 That's almost $600 without including additional travel costs (airline tickets, food or gas, if driving). In 2006, the Durham Eagles had eleven Pop Warner Academic All-Americans. Unfortunately, only one player could attend. In order to make it easier for our deserving players to attend, we have established the Academic All-American Scholarship Fund which is designed to raise money solely for this endeavor. Food Lion, through its "Lion Shop & Share" initiative has allowed us to establish a program where the use of your Food Lion MVP Card will donate a portion of your grocery purchase to our fund. There is no cost to you and it does not increase your purchase amount in any way.
