History of the Durham Eagles
The Durham Eagles were founded in 1993.  Initial funding for the Durham Eagles Athletic Association was provided by Rodney Rogers and James “Butch” Williams.

Rodney played both basketball and football at Hillside High School .  He starred in both sports and received scholarship offers from numerous universities to play either sport.  Rodney attended Wake Forest University where he so distinguished himself on the basketball court that his jersey was retired by the university in 1995.  Rodney left college after his junior year to enter the NBA.  He was the 8th overall player selected in the draft by the Denver Nuggets.  Before retiring in 2006, Rodney played for several teams including the Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets, New Orleans Hornets, and the Philadelphia 76ers.  While playing for the Suns, he was named the NBA 6th Man of the Year in 2000.  This award symbolizes the player that makes the greatest contribution to his team as a non-starter.  He has since returned to Durham where he owns and operates a successful trucking company.

James Williams, or Butch as he more commonly known is a very successful Durham attorney.  While not as well known as Rodney, Butch’s role with the Eagles has stood the test of time as he continues to provide legal counsel and guidance to the organization.

Like Rogers , Butch also has roots that run deep in our community.  Butch received his undergraduate degree at North Carolina Central University in 1976.  In 1979, he graduated from the School of Law at NCCU.  Butch has a thriving practice as a defense attorney and sports agent.  He represents several very prominent players in the NFL and NBA.  His client list includes Alge Grumpler of the Atlanta Falcons, Greg Ellis of the Dallas Cowboys, William Henderson of the Green Bay Packers, and Rasheed Wallace of the Detroit Pistons, to name a few.  Butch provides mentoring and financial backing to several youth organizations in Durham .  Additionally, he has returned to his alma mater to teach the finer points of law to aspiring young attorneys.

The Eagles will forever be thankful for the kindness and generosity of these two gentlemen.
